The High Line, Manhattan, New York City
What was once an abandoned freight rail line is now a beautiful public park on the West Side of Manhattan that runs from Hell's Kitchen to Chelsea (TheHighLine.org).
You can still see the original structure that supports the aerial park from the stair entrances and underside framework, which creates a historical, turn-of-the-century feel. For years, the high line was abandoned, overgrown and destined to be torn down (History, TheHighLine.org). Fortunately, historical advocates came together in the early 2000's to plan a future for the landmark, and by 2009, the park began to open sections to the public (History, TheHighLine.org).
The park has been beautifully redesigned with a modern look that integrates natural greenery into an urban environment.
Since I have business every year at the Jacob Javits Convention Center, I always make sure to do two things: 1) enjoy ravioli and a glass of wine at Mercato, my favorite, traditional Italian restaurant tucked away in Hell's Kitchen, and 2) walk the High Line from my AirBnB to Chelsea.
*Bonus - I always stop at the Chelsea Market before I head back for some gift shopping and a quick bite.

The High Line provides elevated views of the city and inspires you to daydream about living in the chic downtown apartments that you will pass by. Even when it is packed with tourists from around the world, it is still a peaceful break from the busyness below. It is also a great place to get a morning jog in without having to stop and wait for a crossing light, or get stuck behind wandering tourists.
There are plenty of ways to support the High Line to ensure that the park is well kept and continues to grow, whether it is through the Adopt A Plant program, cute gifts, or getting involved.
